Hi,
My name is Jacksil, I work for a New York City based startup company called Oliver. It is a very laid back and fun company to work for. I enjoy coming in everyday and see what new adventures the day holds. As great as Oliver is there is one thing that I really don’t enjoy about working there. That thing is called the “Late Wheel.” As the name implies it is a punishment for whom ever arrives late to work.
How does it work? It is simple. The wheel has a total of 8 different task (punishments) that one must complete if her or she is late. One spins the wheel and whatever task they get must be completed by the end of the day. The person that arrives late is documented by the overseer of the Late Wheel; Lex. Lex then informs one of our co-founders Amir who then in turn makes sure the the late ones spin the wheel. This post is the result of me arriving late and having to spin the wheel. I was the first person to ever get this task. I could post in the company blog anything I wanted as long as it was 500 characters or more.
Since I had no real topic to speak of I decided to inform you all about the Late Wheel. It has it’s pros and cons. Some of the positives is that I definitely makes one want to come in early. Spinning the wheel just adds on more work to an already busy day. The cons are that it is not fair to those who have to take multiple public transportation vehicles. A delay in one train or bus means a spin of the wheel. Something that a person can not control should not be punishable.
I would not do away with the wheel of it were up to me. But I would adjust the policy. Giving people one or two days of being late and not having to spin seems fair. Specially to those who live further away. But in conclusion, the wheel seems like it’s here to stay and we need to embrace that fact. Some minor adjustments should be made which I believe will come with time.
What do you guys think about he idea of a late wheel? or tell us of any punishment your company uses.
