Week 5 — Start Up Diary 3
The “week” started at the weekend, when you’re trying to get a business off the ground they tend to do this. On Saturday I was working on reaching out to people that I would like to take part in a new podcast I’m working on. The plan is for me to interview marketers in the e-commerce space about recent successes and future opportunities, I’ve been wanting to do a podcast for a while so this is something I’m looking forward to. At the time of writing I’ve had a few positive replies so hopefully I’ll be able to start recording and posting these in the next fortnight, it’ll be posted weekly on a Monday.
The actual week started a bit slowly. Think it was a bit of the Monday morning blue. I did manage to get to the bank and set up a savings account though.
I was back at it properly on Tuesday. Spent the day catching up on work and reactivating the paid search account for Newsham Media, I need to start investing more money into outreach and more generally going on the offence around new business which I’ve been far too passive about it since I started.
I’ll be investing more time getting out and meeting people so I can let the m know about the agency and what we stand for— I’ll be cutting my video output from 5 to 3 videos to give me the time to do this. This quote I found sums it up quite nicely.
Thursday was my usual content day so I spent some of the day putting this weeks videos together, the first with my new green screen set up — take a look at them on our YouTube channel.
On Thursday evening I attended my first Social Media Meetup at Launch22, this was a really interesting session with three great speakers looking at different parts of social media. I highly recommend coming along to the next one if you’re in the area. It was encouraging to see such an active community in Liverpool and it was also great to get out and meet new people. Got me thinking about doing something similar in the future.
Definitely a week of two halves, much more motivated in second half. I don’t know it was just the hangover but I noticed this week how lonely this experience actually is, I work in a busy co-working space and have plenty of people supporting me, but I still feel pretty lonely. No one else works for Newsham Media, just me, so its hard for people to really connect with what I’m doing. Its lonely at the top, even more so when it’s a hierarchy of one. This is another reason why its so important for me to get out and meet new people, both potential clients and people with complimentary skills who I can partner with. If anyone knows anyone, anywhere in the world, setting up a similar agency, or if you are yourself, get in touch, it’d be great to talk.
When it comes to money, its on my mind pretty much constantly. I’ve not worried about money like I am at the moment for a long time. I’m lucky enough that my parents are in no rush to see the back of me but this last few weeks has given me huge respect for anyone with a mortgage and kids to feed who make the decision to start a business, that takes a huge amount of guts and faith in your success. I may be just be worrying a bit too much though so I’m making more of an effort to meditate more from this week, I’ve definitely fallen off with that in the last few months. It should help me focus a bit more. I highly recommend it if you don’t do it already.
Once again I feel like I’m getting closer to where I need to be, I just need to keep tweaking things. I’ve got a few things going on at the moment that should bring that much needed extra income in and make all the hard work worth it.
That’s it for this week, there’ll be another post next week.
As always thank you very much for taking the time to read this post.
