How to give good advice

Go through it yourself.

You can read all the books you want, listen to all the podcasts, watch the videos and read the articles, but until you have experienced that hardship and grappled with the problem yourself, you don’t own that knowledge.

Until then, you are just regurgitating shit that other people have told you: you’re just dropping information on people without really understanding what it means.

If you’re self-aware enough you’ll be able to feel it when you’re doing this: you’ll get a dirty feeling in your stomach when you go to publish that article or shoot that video, because deep down you know that you don’t really understand what you’re talking about.

Conversely when you speak from experience your words flow out of you and it almost feels therapeutic: your message has an added emotional dimension to it because it’s based on something real — and your audience will feel that.

So if you want to give good advice then you first need to work on yourself: you need to face your own demons, be beaten into the ground time and time again, and then rebuild yourself from the rubble.

When you do that, you become an authority worth listening to.

“If you want to change the world you need to start with yourself and work outwards.” — Jordan Peterson
