Also, emoji is actually a Japanese creation! It comes from e (絵, “picture”) + moji (文字, “character”). The similarity of the word “emoji” to the English words “emotion” and “emoticon” is pure coincidence. Pretty crazy coincidence if you ask me. The designs used by Apple and Google very closely mirror the early Japanese ones as emoji’s incorporation into Unicode was largely contributed to by Japanese individuals working at those companies.

Regardless, your comment about cultural differences is very valid and not something I took into account. Thank you for mentioning it.
