Vettel on top after First Day of First Test
Sebastian Vettel topped the time sheets on day one of the first pre-season test around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Lewis Hamilton however almost produced more than double the laps of any other driver.
Hamilton was on charge, completing a total of 156 laps but was marginally slower than his Ferrari rival.
Vettel was four tenths quicker than the Mercedes of Hamilton, but only managed to complete 69 laps, less than half of Hamilton’s laps completed.
McLaren had a solid day of running, finishing 5th fastest, but more importantly completing 84 laps. Although their true performance is yet to have been discovered, it’s a massive improvement from the 6 laps they completed at this stage last season.
Williams finished the day lying in P4 as Valterri Bottas was off the pace by just over a second.
Newcomers Haas had a mixed day with Romain Grosjean completing a steady 31 laps and finishing 10th fastest. However, a front-wing failure compromised their running for the majority of the day.
Red Bull had an encouraging day with Daniel Ricciardo completing 87 laps and finishing 3rd, but was a hefty 1.1 seconds off the pace from former teammate Sebastian Vettel.
Manor also looked impressive on day one with their new engine supplier Mercedes hoping to make them more competitive.
Pascal Wehrlein completed a total of 54 laps and finished 3.3 seconds off the pace in 9th position.
The Renault name was back in Formula 1, but they didn’t start back as they would of liked, finishing bottom of the time sheets and completing only 37 laps, only Haas completed less.
Toro Rosso finished the day off in P7, with their midfield rivals Force India and Sauber rounding off the day in P5 and P8.
Day 2 of the first test starts tomorrow with Nico Rosberg, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso all in action.
