I always wondered if Drake was on snapchat. Publicly he isn’t, but maybe he has a secret account that he uses with friends. He’s one of the biggest artists to really come of age in the social media era. His willingness to embrace meme culture and share snapshots from his life on instagram helped catapult him to the top of the music industry. When DJ Khaled and others started amassing huge followings on snapchat, why didn’t Drake follow suit? He’s cool, funny (see: SNL), has a big entourage, lots of money, and enviable lifestyle, etc. Why doesn’t he choose to share this with us on snapchat? Why don’t more celebs in general use snapchat stories to communicate with fans? The numbers are growing for sure but it’s still substantially less than any of the other major social platforms.

As you probably know by now, Instagram released their own stories feature just yesterday. It’s pretty much identical to Snapchat stories. The difference is that most celebs are already on instagram, and they are on it in a very public way. Drake has 26.2 million followers on Instagram. The stories feature is now so prominent it’s hard to resist. Already I’ve seen Karlie Kloss take to this new tool in a big way. I think Taylor Swift posted something today as well. Will others start to follow suit? I can’t help but think Drake will get on it soon enough.

Either way, it will be interesting to see these two social media heavy hitters go head to head over the next few months. In the mean time, I’ll be using both.

If you havent already, add me on both: insta & snapchat (username @jackycoyne). I’ll be at the drake concert tomorrow night 😎
