Day 31 — YAAAAS SQL

When it comes to database structure, I’m a giant giant fan. Of course we’ve been dealing with the loosey goosey model of no structure and “make it work” style of Mongoose/Mongo on Node.JS.

If you Google “giant fan” you actually get images of NY Giants fans. Weird.

Why exactly do I like SQL, beyond structure? To be honest, it’s because I’ve seen SQL, worked with the data tables that come out from it, and have years of experience going through the headache of trying to figure out a way to connect tables. So yeah, to have something I know about be part of our work I’m super thrilled about.

In fact for our daily assignment today we needed to create a PostgreSQL database, add a table with certain fields, insert data into the table, query on a few items that were entered, update one row, and then delete those that have a certain field.

Start to finish it took me 20 minutes and frankly I spent 15 minutes trying to resolve an issue for the update because I’ve never seen the updating based on a timestamp. In the end, got it. Ahhh sweet sweet victory. Check back on Wednesday in which I have no idea what I’m doing though. That should be “fun”.

Struggles: Last weeks stuff will be coming back into play to some degree this week. Not super excited about that. I think if I can get some one on one time I can probably figure it out and get better but until then it’s a struggle to get caught up with last weeks.

Understood: At the moment, PostgreSQL.

Looking forward to: More building and querying within SQL. BRING IT!

But less of the express stuff. That was awful.
