Somehow 2020 is half over. I’ve been alive for over two decades and 2020 has felt like no other year. Time doesn’t have meaning anymore, but we’ve reached the halfway point on the calendar year. I’ve compiled a list of songs and albums that I’ve loved so far in 2020. I encourage you to check them out if you haven’t already.

SONGS

25. Rina Sawayama — “XS”

Rina Sawayama and Clarence Clarity were destined for stardom. Their early work laid out the blueprints for foolproof pop bangers. 2020 became Rina’s year to shine. On an album that Elton John called his…

Here we go! 2019 gave us some spectacular new sounds so let’s dive into 20 of the records that stood out to me and deserve high praise.

20. Spellling — Mazy Fly

Time flies when you’re having fun! And by having fun, I mean consuming as much media as humanly possible over the last 10 years. 2010 was the year I started evaluating music and film from a critical perspective and dedicated a lot of my free time listening to as much as I possibly could before my brain shut down. I have kept meticulous lists of songs, albums, remixes, and music videos that made a significant impact on me, my peers, and the world around me since 2010. I decided it would be a fun trip down memory lane to recount…

It’s that time of year again! It’s been my tradition every year to listen to as much new music as humanly possible so you don’t have to. I’ve compiled what I think are the 30 best/most unique albums to come out since January 2019 so you can browse and maybe find your next obsession.

Honourable mentions that didn’t make the cut but deserve a shout-out: Lizzo — Cuz I Love You, The National — I Am Easy to Find, William Basinski — On Time Out of Time, Hand Habits — Placeholder, Nivhek — After its own death/Walking in a spiral…

As the year draws to a close, it goes without saying that 2018 had no shortage of amazing music. The music headlines this year were everything from celebratory (Janelle Monae, Kacey Musgraves) to unforgivable (Kanye, 6ix9ine). On top of that, 2018 saw tons of A-list musicians releasing medicore albums (Beyonce, Kanye, Kendrick, Drake, Justin Timberlake, etc). However, even when the big leagues come up short, there are new artists to fall in love with. 2018 brought us great new musicians making bold choices and experimenting with genres in ways that feel like giant leaps forward in the modern music landscape…

2018 has been a monumental year for cinema and while it has been criticized as a time of never-ending franchises, derivative sequels, and uninspired reboots, it is also a time of brave and bold choices that lead to unforgettable events. Many of 2018’s films feel like life-changing events. To paraphrase a review of 2016’s Moonlight, I felt like a different person leaving the theatre afterwards. Some of the best moments of 2018 involved me turning to my friends as the credits rolled, unable to articulate what I just witnessed. Annihilation sparked a feverish conversation at the bus stop, Climax reduced…
