The last time my wife was in the ER was a few days after the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was legal. This was before transition, before I knew I was trans. So we’d been together as lesbians for 20 years that year. The decision came out 2 days before my birthday, on June 26, and we went and got married on June 30. After 20 years!! Within days I was in the ER, with a sick wife, and a nurse (?) who would not use the word “wife” when referring to my relationship with my, well, legally married wife. The most she could do was “partner”, which is how she introduced me to the doctor. I loudly and quickly corrected her with “WIFE” shaking the doctors hand. He was nice. I called the hospital’s department of complaints (it has a better name than that) and let them know what happened. They were nice about it too and implied there would be some training of staff. I hope not to find out anytime soon.
