Let’s talk about the Online Disinhibition effect in short before writing it in detail. What is the Online Disinhibition effect? It is the loosening of inhibition as well as the social interactions which are mostly present in the face to face interactions, this effect most commonly takes place during online interactions.

This effect is not always beneficial, I have witnessed harsh criticism, rude language, hatred, anger and in many cases even threats.

There are many different factors involved, below is a list of a few

· Dissociative anonymity is one of the major reasons behind this effect, what I have observed and learnt through different sources shows that on internet, people start interacting with one another and feel protected, anonymous. This anonymity helps them in feeling less vulnerable in engaging towards this type of social behaviour.

· Invisibility is the mechanism in which a face is not known while chatting or communicating over the internet. The internet acts as a shield from being physically available and this presents different possibilities which are not as easily attainable in face to face interactions.

· Asynchronicity is the mechanism in which different messages and emails are being produced. Anyone is able to logout without seeing the response of another party at any time. This can help in the allowing of catharsis and escape from any kind of potential negative reactions. This mechanism also lessens the pressure.

· Solipsistic Introjection is a method in which an online message is experienced in the human mind, hearing the voice of the sender as the receiver reads the message, this is something I have personally experienced and usually occurs when speaking to someone you genuinely want to be talking to. Through this, the comfort level increases, and it leads towards the disinhibition.

· Dissociative imagination leads towards the feeling of escapism and I believe that one can remain in touch or avoid next person just be logging in or out. The internet seems more like a ‘make believe’ space, where I can run away from any problems. I start feeling more disinhibited while I am online as compared to being offline.

· Minimisation of the Authority remains hidden no doubt in it as just through texting or listening to some voice messages don’t make this clear at all that how the other person looks like or what if he or she is telling is right or wrong. Chances exist in the ratio of 50 50. But what I have observed that to some extent, image of next person starts existing in the mind about personality, status and many other different things as well. Internet is a platform that offers more or less equal playing field for every kind of a person. It allows a person to be more disinhibited and make others engage.

· Minimisation of Authority is a major factor that occurs on social media and all over the internet. Your offline status is usually seen as an irrelevant part of you. People do not care if you are sitting in your lounge room or on the go, which causes other online to see you as an equal, which in theory, should be a positive thing, however most people online use this to make themselves seem better than you, causing a negative effect

If we could all be genuine online, and not hide behind an anonymous screen, All interactions, both online & face to face would possible cause a more positive effect rather than a negative.

Be genuine, Be true to yourself and others & Don’t live a lie on the Web!
