The comparison is between perceived explanations for decisions after an attack. The author is not equating learning a skill and a choice of dating partner. She’s comparing examples of personal responses after trauma with how each response would be viewed in society. Not the responses to one another.

It appears the nuance of this passage may have escaped you, but a bisexual woman deciding to date only women does not necessarily reflect a change of sexual orientation.
