Note: Many states who have Voter ID laws offer free IDs to citizens who otherwise don’t have them. Purportedly, this makes Voter ID laws just in that everyone has the opportunity to get an ID. But this process is never as easy as it seems, particularly for poor and marginalized people. There’s an application process, lots of paperwork, a lot of waiting, possible fees incurred, possible language barriers, etc. Most of all, spending the time (sometimes more than just one day) to acquire an ID is time lost that could have been spent working or looking after one’s children or family. Despite many state’s best efforts, getting free IDs into the hands of voters who don’t otherwise have ID has proven to be a near impossible pursuit.
