The New Girls Club

Last post we profiled Sheryl Sandberg and her movement to get more women into leadership positions. It is movement critical to gender equality, and also the success of our business, whether for-profit or nonprofit. But, how do we get there? One of her suggestions is mentoring.

Men, especially white men, have the “Old Boys’ Club.” It is an informal, but incredibly powerful tool for career success for men. Here’s a short article about the “Old Boys’ Club” and how it is still prevalent today.

But, there is no “Old Women’s Club”, nor a “New Women's’ Club” for that matter. However, slowly, that might be changing. Women are starting to make a name for themselves in the workplace and it is important that as we do, to bring along the next generation.

A few years ago, Uche Ofodile, a former executive at Vodaphone, spoke at a TedX event in Ghana. She spoke about the importance of mentoring, especially among women.

So, next time you’re looking for a mentor, or mentee, consider a fellow female. By helping each other, we all succeed.
