Why “Midnight Texas” Deserves A Season Two.

NBCs “Midnight Texas” has quickly become a fan favorite, along with having the highest rated premiere for a new or returning drama series this summer. A second season of this supernatural drama has as of yet remained unannounced, leading fans to take to social media to call for the shows renewal. So far the call has remained unanswered by NBC, and if you’re reading this you might be wondering why fans have taken to this show so quickly, and strongly, and why we are asking for it to be renewed. Well let me tell you. Quick warning though, there are spoilers ahead, continue at your own peril.

“Midnight Texas” puts a whole new spin on creatures and character tropes that many people see as worn out. Such as with Lem, the shows token vampire, who drinks blood but in a twist is also able to leech energy from others to sustain himself after an encounter with main character Manfred’s Grandmother Xylda when she was young. Or how the Rev whom many assumed was a werewolf was revealed to actually be a weretiger.

The show features a cast of supernaturally and racially diverse characters. Which includes strong female characters who kick as much ass as the male ones, such as when Fiji resident witch of Midnight rips a cue stick out of pawnshop owner Bobo’s hands telekinetically, or when local hitwoman Olivia stakes a vampire in the heart with her high heeled shoe. The show also includes a prominent LGBT storyline featuring Joe and Chuy Strong, husbands, who together run the local tattoo parlor/nail salon, and harbor the knowledge of the thinning supernatural veil that Midnight sits upon. Joe has been revealed to be a fallen angel, but Chuy’s supernatural identity is still unknown.

In addition to it’s amazing cast of actors and characters, “Midnight Texas” storylines brilliantly reflect the societal struggles of today. These include the ideals of a chosen family, which the citizens of Midnight have become. Also including storylines which bring attention to issues such as sexual abuse through the character of Olivia, drug addiction through main character Manfred’s struggle with opiates, and racism/bigotry through the Midnight community’s interactions with local white supremacist group The Son’s of Lucifer. All of which are prominent issues the world is now facing.

Really this show is (in my opinion) just all around amazing, the people and their lives pull you in so quickly, and it captures something that other supernatural TV shows seem to be lacking lately. I am seriously hoping that NBC gives us many more seasons of this truly great show, because it and it’s amazing cast and crew deserve a renewal, as do we fans who are fighting for it. Check it out for yourself, “Midnight Texas” airs Mondays at 10pm on NBC.
