Field Day at USFSP

Last Saturday, Campus Recreation held USFSP’s first ever field day at the volleyball courts.

Students competed in an intramural style field day where points were taken for each team of two. Campus Recreation score keepers tracked the progress of each team. By taking part in games such as tug of war, dizzy bat, and the three legged race, participants were able to regress to their days in elementary school where field day was an annual event.

Field Day was a way to get students involved in the recreational activities the campus offers. Participant, Chris Isaacs, said that many students aren’t aware of the intramural sports that are offered at USFSP. This event opened the door for students to see all the sports they can join.

“I’m a very competitive person, I loved having the chance to compete with other students and learn about the other sports we have on campus,” Isaacs, who was one of the top contenders in the competition, said.

CampRec has been trying to host a field day for some time now. This is the first time it has been planned all the way through. Sports Club Coordinator, Meaghan Linnell, pushed for this event as a way to get students involved and to help them gain skills in teamwork.

“I really want students to get involved in different, fun, and exciting activities,” Linnell said.

Because many students came and went, keeping score was difficult. Linnell stated that everyone was a winner.

Since Campus Recreation already had all the supplies needed for all the activities, for example, volleyballs and a tug of war rope, it was virtually free for the organization. The only cost was for labor. Students were able to attend this event, like all other USFSP events, free of charge. Students pay for events like this with their A&S fees which are tacked onto tuition each semester.

Students can look forward to more recreational events hosted by Campus Recreation this semester. Their biggest event this year, RecFest, will take place on April 12th at 3 p.m. on Harborside Lawn.
