You Are What You Do

¨A lot of people think they are who they think they are.¨

A friend of mine made this statement the other day and I thought it was profound, yet so simple. We were talking about how what we do matters much more than what we say we are going to do. It was a talk about taking action and being willing to fail.

It’s simple, we are what we do.

We are all guilty of talking about our dreams, ambitions, and intentions but not living them to their fullest potential. We are all guilty of thinking about what we are going to do. It’s interesting that we have this inclination because we don’t learn much from thinking. At least not to the extent which we can grow from actions that create tangible results.

A feedback loop is required to understand more of reality and increase the precision the next time we attempt something. When we are thinking, we often miss the opportunity for a feedback loop because we are too entangled with the object of our concentration. To understand is to witness an object of concentration, with full clarity, as if it were transparent.

Thinking, on the other hand, is like a light jog on a treadmill. You can do it. It may even feel good and be enjoyable for some time, but in the end you haven’t gone anywhere.

(Sorry to those of you who enjoy running on a treadmill, but I’ve never understood you).

This isn’t about getting your daily dose of cardio in, though. This is about creating the life you want to live. There’s seriously only one way to manifest your dreams. The secret is taking the step you can, now. Not thinking about it or planning, but taking it. No matter how small the step may be, you are moving towards a more beautiful and harmonious life.

Beyond this, what you do articulates who you are. You don’t have to say much for people to get a feeling of what you are about. The way you walk in your life says enough on its own. When you are taking the actions that you know will get you to your desired outcome, you’re free anyway. So, it doesn’t really matter whether people will catch your vibe or not.

You are what you do. Be a doer. Stay committed to taking the steps necessary to reach your goals this year without thinking too much about it. A good or bad outcome doesn’t matter. You’ll have learned in the process and will be that much closer to hitting the target. Above all you’ll know that you are far more than you think you are.
