The Republican party has fundamentally misunderstood public opinion on abortion. They have a choice to make: they could continue to go down this fruitless path or they could do their least favourite thing: evolve. The latter will lead to their eventual, likely politically explosive collapse and the other just might save them.

Let’s start with the evidence, in 2022 and 2023, four states had state constitutional amendments on the ballot which would heavily affect abortion rights, they are: Ohio, a traditionally red swing state, Michigan, a blue state which has been swinging lately, Kentucky, a deep red state, and Kansas, an even deeper red state.

Ohio has become more of a Republican stronghold in recent times, going for Trump by 8 points in 2020 and 2016, but passed the measure by 13 points — no Presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican, has even won Ohio by those margins since 1988.

Michigan has been shifting away from the Democratic party recently, being a part of the infamous ‘blue wall’ that Trump broke in 2016 when he won by 0.2 points and…
