The recent trend against sugar has taken a lot of fruits off the table, as they can be loaded with glucose and carbs that make slimming down difficult. It can be hard to find fruits that aren’t too sugary, especially if you’re trying to get them fresh. Luckily, there are some low-sugar fruits that basically stay in season all year. The fruits on this list might be better when purchased in certain seasons, but in most cases, you’ll be able to find them any time of year.

1. Avocados

They aren’t often thought of as a fruit since they lend themselves so well to savory preparations, but these little green treats count toward your daily servings of fruit without adding any sugar (a cup of chopped avocados has only one gram of sugar). And thanks to Mexico’s consistent year-round production, you can get fresh avocados at a decent price in any season. They make a great dip or a cool textural addition to salads.

2. Passion Fruit

There are only 5.8 grams of sugar in the average passion fruit. This delectable pod is native to Brazil and surrounding countries, but it’s in season all year thanks to a hearty constitution and a widespread cultivation area. Grabbing a passion fruit is a safe bet any time of year, and you can incorporate it into a smoothie or eat it sliced. Passion fruit is packed with vitamin C and iron, and is also a great source of riboflavin and niacin, which help regulate your body’s thyroid activity.

3. Strawberries

You might be surprised to learn that strawberries, one of the most popular flavor inspirations for desserts and candies, are low in sugar! A serving of strawberries has 1/3 the sugar of the same amount of grapes, and fresh strawberries are easy to find year-round in most parts of the United States. They’re great sliced and added to a bowl of granola or enjoyed on their own. Just don’t be tempted to dip them in chocolate or you’ll negate the whole low-in-sugar thing.

4. Lemons

While some lemons have a primary season from late winter to early summer, so-called “Eureka” lemons can be picked all year round, meaning it’s rare to encounter a shortage of fresh lemons. This widely-available fruit is also one of the lowest in sugar, with only 3 grams per serving. Lemons are a fantastic source of vitamin C and are delicious when added to water or used in a salad. They also make a great addition to seafood dishes.

5. Cantaloupe

The cantaloupe has the least sugar out of any popular melon, and its long shelf life means you can get fairly fresh cantaloupes any time of year (although they’re likely to be shipped from South America unless it’s summer time). A bowl of diced cantaloupe makes for a healthy, low-sugar breakfast or a snack throughout the day.

Frustrated by the lack of fresh, low-sugar fruits that fit your diet? Try the options above and you might be able to get your recommended servings without adding carbs and sugars to your diet.
