How to Get a Promotion

Let me share a common scenario I witness from fellow colleagues wanting a raise. This scenario usually happens when a person waits after a certain amount of time. Maybe it’s six months, maybe it’s after a year. The person feels bitter that the company didn’t give them a raise.

Here’s some insight from working in corporate design. If a company can pay you less for the same amount of work, the company will. You may feel this isn’t right, but it’s not right or wrong. It’s business. Large corporations try to keep costs low. Does this mean you don’t deserve a raise? Absolutely not. It means you must be proactive to show that you are worth it.

There are a few things you need to do.

First make sure you surpass the expectations of your position. Ask yourself some honest questions like “do you complain a lot”, “are you negative”, “do you get along with your coworkers”, “do you show up for work every day that you’re suppose to”. There may be other requirements for your specific situation, but the last requirement you want to be aware of is to know the responsibilities for the next level of your position. For example, if you’re a designer and the next level is a senior designer, you need to know what you will be doing as a senior designer.

You’ve checked marked all these requirements and now you’re ready for the next step. You will need to demonstrate how you provide value. This can come in many ways of how to accomplish, but what has worked for me is thinking of significant projects or accomplishments you’ve done in the past 6 months or a year that helped further your company’s objectives. Did you help with a major initiative, or do you proactively and constantly help your coworkers, etc. Put some meaningful thought into this and be aware of all the responsibilities for the next position level. Your management staff needs to be certain that you can handle the additional responsibilities of the promotion, so it’s best to have some examples of how you are already achieving those responsibilities as well.   1. Demonstrate your value by showing and telling any significant projects or accomplishments you did to further the company’s objectives
  2. Speak about the things you are doing that are similar to the responsibilities of the advanced position.

Once you’ve prepared all the things mentioned above, you will need to request a meeting with your immediate boss. Make sure they know you want to discuss getting a raise. The key to addressing your superiors is the way you frame your conversation. You can discuss anything from not getting enough money to getting too much work to getting a raise, but you must frame your discussion with the utmost respect and positivity.
