Q&A — How can I avoid the urge of redesigning my website for the 100th time?

Redesigning your website can result from a multitude of reasons. It is important to understand the why of your redesign before you redesign your website. One of the most profound thinkers of this generation is Simon Sinek, and one of the most prolific beliefs he advocates is “do you know your why?”. Knowing your why gives you the purpose, belief, cause to do what you do.

As a website designer and developer for many years I knew the most common reason why I felt the need to redesign my websites early in my career was because I didn’t like the look of it or got “inspired” by a new cooler design elsewhere. In my early years I thought the look of a website was the primary indication of how great a website is. As I grew and developed my skills, I realized that is far from reality.

In that article I gave a framework for improving your design ability, but more importantly the framework helps you discover your goals. The goals of your website will help uncover your “why”.

Let me break it down and give some real tangible steps.

In the article I used the example of building a portfolio site. One of the main questions to ask and answer for yourself is who is the audience. With a portfolio site the audience is going to be people that you potentially want to hire you.

The why or purpose of this website is to get work. I think many people will understand this part but where there is a disconnect is what that actually means. You need to get in the mindset of a client and create an experience and content they need.

Your site needs to be ridiculously easy to see samples of your work, put in some testimonials and case studies of how you achieved their goals. They need to know the ROI of hiring you. Don’t just expect to create a nice looking design. Don’t put purple on your website just because you like the color purple. Every pixel you place on your design should be backed by a why.

With that said, to help you prevent designing your website 100 times over is by mapping our your goals and understanding your why. Once you have these metrics you can use these as guides to launch a successful design.
