Super Bowl Ads: A 10 Year Old’s Unique View

On February 7, 2016 millions of fans were excited by the big game. On that same day, millions of fans were bored out of their minds. Fortunately, the Super Bowl ads were there to save them. It really is remarkable that on one day of the year we actually like to see television ads. In fact, for many non football lovers, the ads are the best part of the Super Bowl.

Here’s the thing: this year’s ads were not as good as other years’. Why? This is why we have conspiracy theories. I’ll talk about that later, though.

Some Super Bowl ads were funny. The ad by Avocados From Mexico takes place in a different world in the future far away. In The Museum of Earthly Wonders, the tour guide shows alien museum goers items from Earth such as “a cube of rubix” which was considered unsolvable, “a twenty first century torture device” a/k/a an airplane, “the white and gold (it’s totally black and blue) dress that caused a civil war” and most importantly, the Avocados From Mexico. The aliens ooh and ah at this amazing wonder.

Some ads were just plain weird. In Puppy Monkey Baby by Mountain Dew, three men are sitting on the couch. All of a sudden a puppy/monkey/baby (it’s hard to explain) marches in with a bucket of Mountain Dew. The strange animal (did I mention he had a diaper?) starts chanting, “puppy monkey baby, puppy monkey baby, puppy monkey baby”. Then the animal proceeds to giving the men sodas. They all dance into the hallway like a bunch of lunatics who have just had too much Mountain Dew. The Slogan for Mountain Dew Kickstart is DEW, JUICE, CAFFEINE, COMBINED. The caffeine part explains a lot.

Although there were plenty of okay ads, I don’t feel like this year’s advertisements were up to par with other years’. There were too many ads that were just well, normal ads. Here’s where the conspiracy theory comes in:

All of business is a rock band. If the lead singer has amazing vocals in a song, and the rest of the band only plays a few notes, all of the members except for the lead singer are angry. Then, the band proceeds to collapse.

Advertising is the same way. If one advertising firm makes multiple ads for the same event, they certainly don’t want any ads outshining the others. If some ads do outshine others, some companies will be very grateful to the advertising agency, and use the same agency in the future. However, there will be far more companies complaining that their ads were overlooked. All of the advertising agencies are afraid of this. As a result, most of the ads stink.
