My background is in psychology and language so naturally I was drawn to this article. I can personally see where the excitement is because of the child example you gave. When I was studying in Germany, I taught Spanish to an adult group and a child group. I noticed that the children instinctively learned much like the computer you described above. Children don’t ask why perro is dog, they just look at you and accept it. The context of the class (probably along with some good parenting) seems to allow them to save the meaning of dog as a concept and employ it later in the proper linguistic context. If AI has gotten to that infantile level of generating connections even as kids do, I am very excited to see where we go next!
