2007–2008 were the rise of emo trend in Russia. One should understand typical Russian attitude and character to realize that emo would never go big (or mainstream a fortiori) in post-soviet countries. Saint-Petersburg remains the only city where the emo community can actually grow. But not today, because the trend is dead.
2007 was also a rise of hardcore scene in Russia. Kids used to go to mosh pits and hated emo characters. Still no people can accept the idea behind emo. The most widespread label was “they cut their veins, because someone does not love him/her”. In the country mostly destroyed after world war II, and reconstructed by grandfathers of modern kids, who worked hard to make good conditions for living of future generations , there is no way parents can say “yes, its cool, be an emo” to a kid who doesnt know real life struggles at all. So basically that’s why politicians didn’t discuss the subject. It was simply bullsh#t not only for them, but for millions of people too.
The average age emo boy/girl was from 16 to 20. Only few could know the way midwest emo sounds. Sixteen to twenty: the period of seeking yourself through applying to different subcultures. But most of them transformed to hipsters now, true ☺
