Being happy my way, on my terms

Being happy is something each person strives to obtain throughout their lifetime.

One of my favorite songs, Pursuit of Happiness, contains a narrative by Kid Cudi highlighting his journey as he pursues happiness. It talks about the ups and the downs he experienced and ultimately resonates the theme of achieving that happiness no matter what occurs during the journey. One of my favorite verses states

Rollin the Midwest side and out livin’ my life getting’ out dreams
People told me slow my roll I’m screaming out fuck that
Imma do just what I want lookin’ ahead no turnin’ back
If I fall if I die know I lived it to the fullest
If I fall if I die know I lived and missed some bullets

Mescudi decided that following his dreams would be the only way to obtain happiness. His perception of what happiness is for him is his truth. This particular perception opened my heart to search for my personal definition of happiness no matter how long it took and what I had to experience to develop my truth.

So many times in life I’ve felt down and out. I’ve battled depression since a young age and I ultimately thought that because of everything I’ve experienced in life that I could never be happy. Then one day something switched in my brain and I understood that by making excuses on why I couldn’t be happy was me subconsciously believing that I didn’t deserve to be happy. That was the one of the biggest lies I’ve ever told myself.

That was how I felt until I understood that I could never be happy until I loved myself.

That was how I felt until I understood that by loving my self, I would love my highest passions and would do anything possible in order to fulfill my highest purpose.

I understood the pursuit of happiness was the pursuit of being all that I could be even when I felt like this journey was overtaking me.

I highlighted the world felt for a reason. Happiness is more than a feeling. It is a state of being. Once you understand that happiness is beyond the way you feel, you will be happy.

Throughout my journey to happiness, I’ve learned two important things that changed my perception of happiness. I can say without a doubt that, happiness exist only when you allow yourself to be happy even when you don’t feel it. Happiness also exist when you retrain your brain to feel worthy of being happy no matter what you experience.

By understanding Self, I began to understand what happiness was. I cannot speak on what happiness means for you but I know what it means for myself and I pursue it everyday.

Being love is what makes me happy. Being at peace no matter what happens is what makes me happy. Sharing my soul with others is what makes me happy. Seeing others laugh and smile is what makes me happy. Giving hope to the hopeless is what makes me happy. Remaining grateful for my journey and my blessings is what makes me happy. Helping others love and understand their true selves is what makes me happy.

Yes, material things can make me happy too, don’t get me wrong. I have realized that material things will fade away or can be taken away. So, I began to set my happiness upon the things that cannot be purchased with money but instead purchased through love. As long as I am breathing, I am a dispensary of love and happiness.

My pursuit of happiness may be different than yours and Mr. Cudi. I know it may take some time for you to realize what happiness means to you. And that’s okay. Remember that what you seek, seeks you. So as you pursue your happiness, it will pursue you.

I pray blessings may bestow you and all that you encounter and that happiness will fill your soul.

Yah bless. Namaste.

Mantra for meditation: I am worthy of being happy. I am worthy of being love. I am a dispensary of happiness and love.
