Why do you want to be on Social Media?
I don’t know where to start from. I was just a kid who lived in his fantasy world. Don’t want to know what the world wants and don’t want to stay in any trouble.
I remember that I just turned eight and I went to my uncle who was the tech geek of the house at that time. I told him that all my friends are making an account on Facebook and it’s an insanely cool thing. Can you help me make one? The next day he told “Kunal, this is your id and password, your account has been made.” I thanked him and started exploring. Connecting with my friends and doing stupid stuff that Facebook had at that time.
The next day I went to my uncle and said, “can you name me King Kunal?” He just laughed and said okay.
The vision of creating a social media platform was great. Connecting geeks online and overloading them with tons of information that isn’t even true. It is just a made-up thing but slowly it becomes a responsibility. I was raised in a very open environment. I started dressing up better, buying branded clothes, buying brand new G-shock because my best friend posted a picture with that, getting a wrist band, posing stupidly for pictures, etc. blablabla
Was it even thought that people will have such a responsibility to maintain their personality on social media that they will feel so scared to change? Well, I grew up in the era of social media. I started having tons of thoughts and I was feeling so stupid. I grew up being protective about everything, being rigid and cranky.
A few years later I had a crush on a gurl, and we were friends. I didn’t know what I did but one of my father’s friends has screenshots that showed that I posted a paragraph expressing my feelings about her on social media. Years later when he showed me, I reactivated my account, saw that, deleted it, and again deactivated it.
Yo bruh, it’s the gram era now.
I shifted to Instagram when it was known by very few in India. Though, Instagram’s growth was phenomenal! Facebook was a cool place, but social media has a problem. You see people making multiple accounts, right?
Why do they do so?
Everybody has a private account nowadays, maybe a photo dumping account too.
Private account has numerous photos of them that they don’t post on their account, and it has fewer followers comparatively which helps them to be free of their like-conscious behavior. Duh, caring about 500 followers out of which you haven’t even spoken to 300, they were just mutual.
“People worked so hard to get this many followers bro, they will lose them if they post private account pictures on this account.”
Now, have I proven the responsibility point; I was talking about?
One more reason why people abandoned Facebook and shifted to gram was that everybody was on Facebook. Gen-Z’s want privacy! Instagram was a fresh platform for a fresh start. Today Instagram is the Facebook of that time, and some other app is being made in a garage, maybe, to become a revolutionary idea for the next generation!
Today I know these things, but at that time my thoughts were different. I don’t know what struck my mind when I started deactivating my Instagram account. I had several reasons to. One of the small reasons was that I was in 12th grade, and it was my board exam year. I had to study hard bro!
I deactivated my account at every exam time in grade 11 and the beginning of grade 12. Finally, I was ‘worried’ about my followers that, they will feel frustrated when I come and post something and then suddenly deactivate and then reactivate. Reality? No one gives a shit.
Anyways this was a good motivation!
Soon after I took my final decision and I deactivated my account, lockdown started and a few of my friends just casually asked me, “how are you staying alive without social media?”
Something I realized in that year when I had plenty of time apart from studying was to be with nature, learn from it and grow philosophically. The things I observed about social media then, were: -
- No one cares about you.
- Everybody has their own world and their own egos because they have created their private accounts.
- Responsibility of personality is the counterpart of this ego.
- People just edit ‘aesthetic’ moments and give you a beautiful plate that is surrounded by shit. Mind you, shit was edited!
- Scrolling just consumes time and does not give anything in return.
- Some moments are beautiful without being captured. You lose aesthetics preserving it.
After ending my 12th, when my exams ended one of my best friends called. He asked me when I am planning to activate my account.
I told I won’t, but I wasn’t sure because I didn’t have any major issues with social media at that time, and I started to have major FOMO because of it.
Soon I was on social media and discovered reels feature in it.
When I started to figure out the problem with the current version, gram was 2 steps ahead. I figured out the issue in mid-2020. I wanted to work for it. After a few months, I started a blog page called Crastinate where I was making claims and writing the reasons for what some people’s so-called vision has done to us. I was taking feedback and understanding the problem.
Soon I realized the whole point and now I am on the verge of launching an app called Crastinate which will help you to have ideas and be creative because if Sir Isaac Newton was not sitting under the tree and escaping from his daily work, there would be no law of gravity.
Procrastination is such a pure word. What it really means is taking a break from your work and escaping into your thoughts and its beauty because “the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, engineering, these are only noble pursuits and are necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” — Robin Williams dialogue from the iconic movie from the iconic era, Dead Poets society.
Steve Jobs used to take long walks to procrastinate. Netflix founder Reed Hastings has made a rule of unlimited vacation and unlimited leaves because he knows if he trusts his people, they will escape from reality and get most of the ideas for this world and for their company.
I don’t know why people have replaced the word escape with entertainment. Check your screen time and count how much time out of that was wasted scrolling and you will realize what I am saying.
What have we lost?
People taking risks. People have their original thoughts which had their ideas and their creativity. It’s so sad that we can’t put filters on our brains.
“You can’t build substance in life unless you’re consistently putting your wealth, reputation, and health at stake.” - Kunal Shah
You know what?
These freakin' geeks are just curbing your creativity and stopping you from getting ideas. Everybody have that grit in them. We are too afraid to live alone and think stuff ourselves. In this machine world to come, we will just need ideas and creativity to survive. You know what people who have ideas and creativity are called?
