On December 13th, 2023, the ICNS (International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems) announced the launch of a new supercomputer named as Deep South. This supercomputer is capable of simulating networks at the scale of the human brain using neuromorphic engineering, which mimics biological processes. It can perform 228 trillion synaptic operations per second which is comparable to the estimated rate of operations in the human brain 🧠.

Why we need Deep South now?

Since the usage of LLMs is increased and the generation of data like (text, images, audio) requires more CPUs and GPUs to train and to inference. In a study ChatGPT query uses 15 times the energy as a normal Google query, this supercomputer can decrease the energy usage. So, it can provide a solution to the global warming too.

While there are not many details available about “Deep South” yet, it is expected to be operational in April 2024. Let us believe that this supercomputer has the potential to advance the AI research and improve the understanding of the human brain with applications in large scale AI apps, biomedicine and robotics. It will be interesting to see the performance and usage of it in the future. PS: Whether there will be a competition to develop neuromorphic computers similar to the race to develop quantum computers? I would love to hear your thoughts 🥳
