William, do you genuinely not understand the views of your opponents or are you misrepresenting them deliberately?
Try to understand the nuance of an argument. The reason that ‘Leave’ are objecting to mass immigration has nothing to do with racism. We are objecting to it, because the poor in our country get all the negative effects of mass immigration, such as being undercut in the jobs market, having to compete for places in increasingly oversubscribed primary schools, and having to use the hugely overcrowded public services. While the rich, on the other hand, get all the positive effects of mass immigration, such as cheap labour, cheap nannies, and cheap cleaners. Why do you think all the traditional labour voters in the north are rebelling by voting for Brexit? They’re getting their own back on a party that was meant to stand up for working people, and instead utterly betrayed them.
This is absolutely no criticism of immigrants themselves, who are good, hard-working people, it’s a criticism of the government’s immigration policy. Do you see the difference? One is blaming immigrants, the other is blaming the government, it’s a completely different thing.
By the way, Nigel Farage, who I’m no fan of, was quoting the new labour apparatchik Andrew Neather who said in his memoir:
‘ Mass immigration was the way that the Government was going to make the UK truly multicultural…I remember coming away from some discussions with the clear sense that the policy was intended — even if this wasn’t its main purpose — to rub the Right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date.’
And you’re also wrong on Scotland. Do you think it’s a coincidence that the rise in support for the SNP has almost exactly correlated with our membership of the EU? Before we joined the common market, the SNP were seen as a bunch of eccentrics. Scotland has rightly worked out, what’s the point of getting direction from London via Brussels, why not just cut out the middle man and go straight to Brussels? The only chance we have of keeping Scotland with us is to offer them a credible alternative. Better to be a partner in a strong United Kingdom than a slave to a German / EU empire.
Despite the sycophantic fawning of people in this comment thread, your article is made up of conventional wisdom after conventional wisdom. It’s a horrible sin to call people racist just because you disagree with them, and by doing so you declare yourself a liberal bigot, which is the worst form of bigotry that there is.
