Why 2017 Is The Year You Could Make Money as an Affiliate Marketer
Affiliate marketing has been around almost as long as the Internet — in 1994 the then fledgling Amazon.com started their now famous ‘Amazon Associates’ program and for years it was a huge part f their success.
Other sites followed, and soon there was a huge multi-billion dollar affiliate marketing industry that had come out of nowhere.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
The first affiliate commission I ever earned was in 2008 when I was at university. I promoted an ebook from Clickbank on Google Adwords, and after getting about 20c clicks for roughly $0.20 each I sold a downloaded website building guide and earned a commission of $21.24. It was an exciting thing at the time — my first ever affiliate commission!
Essentially, affiliate marketing is promoting someone else’s product in return for commission. It can be a physical product, like a TV from Amazon.com or BestBuy, or a digital product or service from a site like Clickbank, JV Zoo, et al.
Commission range from about 5% on Amazon to as much as 75% on Clickbank. The price of products and services people buy online vary a lot too — there are thousand dollar watches that attract a high payout and some some relatively cheap products that you’ll only earn pence from.
Choosing the right product is not just about the payout though — it matters if the product is popular and most of all if you can find people who actually want to buy it.
Some of the easiest affiliate programs to work with in 2017 are Amazon and Clickbank. If you’re just starting I’d have a go with them first — they both sell popular products that are easy to promote and the commissions are reasonably good.
Well, it doesn’t need to be 2017 to make money as an affiliate — some people have been doing it for over 20 years — but it’s a great year to start if you haven’t already. I’ll explain why.
- There are more people shopping online now than ever before — nearly $1.5tn will be spent online in 2017 worldwide. That’s a huge amount and there are no predictions that online shopping will drop in the foreseeable future, despite economic uncertainty.
- More mobile traffic — people are using and making transactions on mobile devices more and more, and mobile advertising inventory, for those who work with paid traffic, is still cheap
- There are so many opportunities to work with companies as an affiliate. All the key players, Clickbank, Max Bounty, Peerfly, Amazon, Clickbooth, are still around, but there are more affiliate networks starting up every day and there are lots of great independent affiliate programmes popping up. In short more and more companies can see the benefits of affiliate marketing and are setting up programs to attract affiliates.
- There are many different ways to drive traffic to offers, from SEO to Paid traffic, there are many ways that work — and increasingly there are good training materials for those who want to learn and master them, making it much easier now to get started and do well than it was years ago.
Where’s the best place to start?
Here’s a list of some of the ‘rising star’ niches over the past year, which is a good place to look for your own niche.
As for training to become the next super affiliate, there are a lot of places you can find advice:
I’d recommend having a look around any of the above — there are some really inspiring stories in the relatively new Builder Society forums, and Wealthy Affiliate has been the leading training course for budding affiliate marketers for more than 10 years now.
Now is the best time to do anything — if you put it off, think of the time and opportunities you will miss before you start to succeed.
Here’s a thought that stuck with me:
The main reason to start in 2017 is because it’s better than 2018 — by then you could have earned thousands in commissions because you started this year rather than waiting.
Don’t let life and opportunities pass you by.
