Donald Trump Responds to the Pope
The Pope has questioned US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s Christianity over his call to build a border wall with Mexico.
Pope Francis said “a person who thinks only about building walls… and not of building bridges, is not Christian”.
Your holiness, I don’t like to talk about my faith a lot, okay? With the jobs situation in this country, and the Mexicans, and ISIS, I’ve got a lot more to worry about than faith. But we are a Christian country, a great Christian country, and I am a great Christian. I’m one of the best, all-time best Christians.
I’ve got to say, the things that you said on that little plane of yours? About me, and my Christianity? Despicable.
I have to say it! I have to. People are saying “Donald, don’t do it, you can’t talk back to the Pope,” but I have to. I have to.
You don’t know me, okay? I’m, listen, it’s unbelievable how Christian I am. When I kneel down in that booth—is that you guys?—when I kneel in that booth, I am Christian for days. I’m hailing Mary, I’m thanking Jesus, I do it all! When I get humble, I get unbelievably humble. I didn’t even go to that Republican debate before Iowa, when I could have completely won it, that’s how humble I am.
The Bible is my favorite book. Little long, little long. The Art of the Deal is easier to get through, by a lot, but that’s probably why I’ve sold so many copies. I’m very successful.
Here’s the thing—the thing about orthodox Catholics, and orthodox religious leaders, and all you other liberals, is that you can dish it out, but you can’t take it. Okay?
You think you’re doing such a good job at being Christian? The number of Catholics in the U.S. has dropped by millions. Millions. The Catholic Church — one of the greatest money-making organizations in history, okay? which is something I respect very much—the Catholic Church is shrinking. It is shrinking.
That is bad business. That is a way to lose money. And people who lose money—well, I’m not going to say it. I’m not. But there are a lot of people, I get so many letters, there are a lot of people saying the Pope is a loser. That’s what they’re saying. That the Pope is a loser.
If I were running the Catholic Church, it would be getting bigger. The Church would be winning so much — I’m telling you, everybody would be Catholic. I could charge them to get into church on Monday, or whenever it is, and they would still come in. That’s what I would do. I’m very successful.
And you’re over there, you’re over there in Vatican City—beautiful buildings, little understated for my taste, but beautiful buildings—and you’re not worried about ISIS. You’re not worried! They’re off in whatever direction Syria is in. You’re in the Vatican, and they are sneaking over here. I’ve even heard they’re coming through Mexico, they’re pretending to be Catholics. That’s what I’ve heard.
ISIS is a huge threat, huge, but what are you doing about ISIS? All this help people, help the poor, don’t build walls talk, when have you said even one thing about killing terrorists? About torturing them? When are you going to talk about how many of these ISIS punks you’d like to kill?
People are asking me, “When is the Pope going to tell us how much he wants to get his hands on an ISIS?” They say—they think you like ISIS. That thing you said, where you want to build bridges with ISIS. You want to give them health care, let them into heaven.
Pathetic. Pathetic. That’s not how we do things in America.
Now, I’ve got a rally in Reno to get to—big crowd, we’re doing great in the polls, we’re doing fantastic—so I’m not going to go on. I could keep going, but it’s too easy, it’s too easy. I don’t want to do it. But I have to say—I have to—I’m not going to question your faith. I’m not going to do it, because it’s a despicable thing to do. But I do have issues with it. I’m not going to question it, but it seems like you’re not a very good Catholic. That’s just how it is.
Time will tell, Frankie.
