The Zen of Ice Cold Showers

Great post. One question: you suggest evolution is a primary source of our mental capacity to cope with chaos. I don’t contest that idea, but does that sufficiently explain why we’ll take cold showers (to borrow your metaphor) in the first place? Why did we venture into frozen lands and face unreasonable dangers before we had the technology to negate such threats? I spent a couple winters in northern Alberta and could never figure out what drove people to settle that region before central heating when there was so much uninhabited land with temperate climates. Animals only seem to risk their lives when they have no other way to preserve their lives, but we seem driven to push our own physical and psychological limits with little or no necessity. That just don’t seem natural…
