While I agree that Austin should put more emphasis on density, urbanization, and loosening regulations like parking requirements, I don’t think it can be said that Austin is not adding tons of units to its housing stock.

Maybe your comment is mostly hyperbole to make a point, maybe you have 8 kids, but if not maybe don’t shop for a 3200 sf home?

Many long time Austin residents are griping because prices have definitely doubled (and tripled) in some neighborhoods. However, there is plenty of housing stock that works for middle class families in great neighborhoods in Austin for less than 300k still, and if you are willing to spend 500k, you can even get a place in the neighborhoods with the $1MM houses, but it is not going to be the nicest house in the neighborhood, and it definitely won’t be 3k square feet.

In any case, the answers to this problem (more dense/urbanized development) is not going to help you meet your requirements if one of them is 3200sf of space and a quarter acre yard.
