60% of the human body is made of the stuff.

Our brains and hearts are composed of 73%, while our lungs are 83%. Skin, muscles, kidneys…even your bones (31%) are made of water.

Water’s the reason we’re alive.

The benefits of getting enough water are endless:

  • Promotes fat loss
  • Flushes out toxins (sweat and urination)
  • Improves skin complexion
  • Balances body fluids
  • Keeps you energized

And much more!

How much water do I need?

This is where it gets tricky.

The Mayo Clinic recommends eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily, but that’s too broad of a recommendation. A 250 lb. bodybuilder and a 20 lb. toddler don’t need the same amount of water.

According to the Institution of Medicine, the average adult male should drink 15–16 cups, while the average adult female should drink 11–12 cups. But like I said before, every body is different.

My rule of thumb: Drink your bodyweight in ounces. I’m 180 pounds; therefore, I should be trying for 180 ounces of water. This is a liberal amount, but it makes me feel great!

How can I drink that much water??

Here are a few ways you can up your water intake:

  1. Drink from a reusable bottle. Keep track of the amount of “bottles” you chug. I personally use a 40-oz. Hydro Flask. That means 4 full bottles of water every day.
  2. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies. You don’t need to drink all of your water. Some of it comes from the foods you eat. In addition to the nutrients and vitamins, plant-based foods contain a decent amount of water.
  3. Exercise. When I work out, I know to keep ample water nearby. This is where I can gulp H2O without even noticing. Replace your sweat with more satisfying water!
