Let’s Talk About Gap Years
So not many people knew (before today) that I’m graduating early. It’s February 23 right now, and I will be graduating at the end of first semester in December of this year. Let’s talk about what a gap year is and why alot of people are opting towards taking a year off between high school and college.
A gap year, as defined by Google is a period of time, usually an academic year, taken by a student as a break between secondary (high) school and higher education (college). Essentially, this is a perfect definition but in my case, I will be taking 8 months off instead of the traditional 12. As I’ve said before, I don’t hate learning, but I hate high school. I feel like this is not the place I’m supposed to be, therefore, I will be taking 8 months to travel, and work full time on Culture Media.
A LOT of people have advised me against this. Many people say things such as “don’t grow up too fast”, “stay with your friends”, or just simply ask me why as if they secretly don’t want to graduate early as well. To me, this is the perfect opportunity to do whatever I want with the least amount of risk possible, and what better time to do it than right now?
I’m a junior right now, but a lot of my senior friends are talking about taking a gap year as well, and I just thought it’d be cool to discuss the opportunities the break provides, and how relevant it is in today’s society.
Please feel free to type a response at the bottom of this page so we can have a real discussion about them. If you’re taking a gap year, or have taken one, I want to know. I need someone to travel the world with while all my friends are still in high school, so hmu and lets chat!! jake@culturemedia.cool if you’re down :)
