I definitely think you should ask about a candidate’s experiences. It’s really important to understand both the scope of a candidates role and how quickly they were promoted as key inputs to assessing a candidate. It’s important to ask because it’s often unclear (or significantly exaggerated) on a resume / LinkedIn profile.

I think you can get a sense of skills like critical thinking by discussing a candidates past jobs / projects. However, just because a candidate can articulate the rational for a decision doesn’t mean s/he came up with those ideas. Therefore I’d be careful not assume that explaining strategic thinking means someone is a highly strategic thinker.
