A Letter to all Moralizers
Look in the looking glass
It’s no secret that we are living in a time of rapid societal change. Some things are improving, despite the focus of mainstream conversations on the deterioration of society. The witty apes that struggled their way out of Africa and conquered everything in sight — including eachother many times over, as individuals, families, tribes, nations — have done well, and continue to do so. But life does not reach a state of ease at any point in the struggle. With every conquest nature has imposed greater complications, higher demands, stronger barriers, heavier restrictions on our noble and brave predecessors, who in many cases suffered pains most of us cannot imagine, and all for the sake of the present moment we inhabit. Like the spokes of a great wheel, human life turns over and over, each generation making the greatest sacrifices, dying out, giving way to the next. Perpetual movement, eternal momentum. Billions of beating hearts, throbbing limbs, moving lips, desiring minds, chipping and cutting at the earth like a great blue marble. An enormous hand sculpting the whole universe in its image. We are the hardy, steadfast, ruthless masses of an endless stream of consciousness and desire. You couldn’t stop it if you wanted to.
Who are you to stamp us out? We seek the truth. We are often misguided. We are often painfully delusional. We are often sinfully ugly. Is that any reason for you to hate what we were, what we are, what we might become? Afterall, there is nothing in the universe that admits of purpose. Human beings can’t be expected to make any distinction or to take up any course that is right and just; everything exists as is. We can’t be held accountable for all our mistakes. Nature holds the keys to our rapture or demise. Humans do not hold these keys, except insofar as we are a part of her, and cannot be untangled from her. Nothing admits of any unifying truth. It’s all very complicated. You claim to know “the truth”. I call bullshit. You and I are equals, and that’s why I must never impose anything on you. It’s why I hope for the same kindness from you. Man made morality can only be petty and insignificant, in the eyes of nature, because before we know which way is correct, we fuck up again.
I don’t believe in objective morality but I do believe in things like reason and strength. It is evident to me, and to many jaded others that there is a class of folks who lack in both respects, who have risen to great heights of power. It’s probably been that way for all of history, fluctuating with every generation. There are those who love men and women because they know about strength and beauty, because they themselves embody it. There are those who hate, because they have never seen it, could never be or know it. When they choose hate, and they are unable or unwilling to see it, it is always out of weakness. Sometimes their hate is visible from the outside. When it is deep enough, it is no longer plain to see, and it becomes inseparable from the emotions. When it takes this form, it takes on a mind of its own, and it punishes everything that contradicts it. People get very attached to their hate. But hate is ugly and painful. So naturally, we supress it. It begins to pull strings from an unknown position in the heart. Hate wishes to be love, just as ugliness wishes to be beauty. So hate becomes “compassion” or sometimes “justice” in the eyes of the hateful. Hate disguised as compassion is the most vindictive kind, and it causes a lot of damage. Hate disguised as compassion is like a poison that can infect even the purest of minds.
So please don’t subject others to your malice under the guise of justice or love. Please don’t harp on the guilt of other people to satisfy your need for destruction and false validation. Please pay attention to your own bad temperament before calling on others to rectify themselves. Thanks, moralizers.
