Fishy Business

The one thing that I believe most high school students can relate to on a deep level is the fact that we are all flat broke. Many high school students are motivated to find a job so that they can blow their hard earned cash on a new pair of sneakers or frequent food runs with their friends. I had always been drawn to do something different from the herd, such as starting my own lawn mowing or dog walking businesses; however, at the time I decided I needed a more steady and reliable form of income. My grandparents were long time customers of a restaurant by the name of The Fish House, a fine dining restaurant, where with my experience as a bus boy at a previous high end restaurant, I felt I would fit in perfectly. I have been employed by The Fish House for seven months now and enjoy my time assisting the servers and customers that come in for quality food each evening. Bus Boys are seen as the workhorse of The Fish House, cleaning and resetting all tables in their section of the restaurant, along with greeting each new guest with waters and butter and creating the optimal environment for the guests and the servers to perform at their best. Bus Boys will also partake in a variety of small tasks throughout a typical evening including but not limited to: sweeping, vacuuming, refilling drinks, picking up finished plates, and delivering rolls to tables. Being a bus boy meshes well with my personality because I enjoy being the person people count on to perform well and I love elevating my coworkers by being the go to guy and setting the highest standard for everyone in the room. At the Fish House I take pleasure in being able to have a factor in the amount of money I am receiving at the end of the night from the servers by being there to assist them every step of the way and doing the little things that show them my work ethic. Being able to get to know and converse with the customers more fluidly is also a plus to working for this great company. In my seven months of working at The Fish House, my main take away is that I have noticed my coworkers becoming or being satisfied with their job and where they are at in life, yet by observing this in them, I now feel more sure than ever that I want to do something more with my life.
