The Truth About Children and Technology

Children love playing with iPhones, game systems and the latest gadgets. But should parents and teachers think twice before allowing young children to access these devices?

This is Chip Donohue. He is the dean of distance learning and continuing education. He is also the founder of TEC Center or Technology in Early Childhood a program dedicated to teaching childhood practitioners. Here’s what he had to say on the merits and shortcomings of the world of technology and Early Childhood.

What We Know About Young Children Using Technology

Phone, computer, camera, essentially anything used around children is considered technological use of some kind in early childhood.

Technology should not be used in classrooms because it’s neat, but because it should serve a real purpose of furthering a child’s learning.

But teachers should also make it a priority to make technology a part of the learning experience. Just as children need to learn to spell and write properly, so should a child also understand how to work technology properly.

Is Technology Bad for Children?

People are concerned about children’s growing time spent in front of screens. The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages screen time for children under two years old.

However, the NAEYC/Fred Rogers argues while young children’s use with technology should be limited, what’s more important is what the gadget is used for. If used purely for entertainment, less maybe more. But if the gadget is helping children learn equations, perhaps the tech is more beneficial.
