Outriders Studio’s programme Media Garage kicked off with its first session held in Warsaw mid-July this year. Leaders of the selected organisations came to spend three days with us. As you know from the previous blog post, we are working with Moldova.org, ShoTam, TheUkrainians and Diez. Each of them has different potential and their own goals and ambitions.

But as every small/medium media organisation which (for now) are primarily driven by grants, they have problems this model brings. And Media Garage aims to help to address them.

So instead of talking about the next great ideas, we spend our first…

A szukaliśmy też czegoś w innej formie.

W formie podcastu. To był początek. Chcieliśmy jednak iść dalej i znaleźć format…

When we started Media Garage, or actually when the idea for this very experimental and unorthodox model was born, we were curious about what kind of an answer we will receive. What we do is “anti-grant” — we are not seeking yet another great idea, but want to spend time analysing one’s operation, find its weak points and chances we can then later help you improve — both with mentorship and financial aid.

We are delighted together with the Solidarity Fund, who is a great partner in this endeavour — with the whole process so far. …

Who are Outriders?

At Outriders, we believe in strengthening the power of journalism to explain the complexities of the world. Our organisation supports journalism globally through a variety of projects: Outride.rs (our online magazine), Outriders Studio (using our know-how to build custom projects with our partners), Outriders Network (an international knowledge sharing platform for journalists), and Wachlarz (a grass-roots community of travellers and reporters).

Whom are we looking for?

Our work is inseparably connected with communication and the media.

Design is the core and centre of our work. It combines our reporting job with interactivity, a look on user’s needs to understand the story better. We publish Outride.rs…

Outriders Meetups reached the capital of Belarus — Minsk. Many were asking us beforehand why do we want to organise an event there given the political situation. Our answer is and always will be the same — it’s easy to work in privileged countries, but our organisation does not like easy things and we standby with those who need our knowledge the most. Even if it means less money from a donor or harder conditions of work.

Thus said — many were surprised there is a vibrant community of journalists in Belarus who create innovative media organisations, especially on the…

Good party needs a DJ, an audience, and a playlist.

While working on the upcoming series of Outriders Meetups which will happen all across Europe in next 9 months — we realised that although each one has a different topic the whole season — including all our Network activities happen in the one, same spirit.

We just couldn’t find a good word or phrase for it. Until today. So here is what we think.

There are many bad things happening to journalists all around the world. They are threatened, shamed, killed. Media people were named people of the year by the Time. And we as journalists always tackle important issues…

You probably came across that word couple of times last year: “Outriders”. Outriders Summit, Outriders Meetups, Outriders Brief, Outriders Data or Outriders Network.

Well, probably there will be more to come, but before it happens — we want to explain them to you, or rather present something, actually.

A year ago, the crowdfunding campaign for the “Outriders project” came to an end. I’ve never particularly liked that word — “the project” — as there are large and small projects, but they all have one common feature: they end, sooner or later. Or they should end, at least. And we do…

Stabilization. That would be the number one word to describe all our activities in the past year. As a young organization, we focused on taking our idea from the“project phase” into making it happen. Our biggest success is that exactly. I felt the need to write about it because it is hard for an outsider to notice. It will all come into life and the public eye in time as we continue to operate within all the frameworks we have developed in 2018.

Here is what we focused on:

  • surrounding ourselves with people who have more experience in various areas…
