Windows 10… dun dun dun!
Well, I’m deviating somewhat from the digital skills and innovation world to rant about Windows 10. Wait, Windows 10 is an innovation in the digital world, kind of, so I’m not deviating that much.

4 years ago when I bought my Acer laptop with windows 7 I was somewhat considering making the switch to Apple. After all my girlfriend had Apple stuff and I thought it might be easier if we were in sync, however the hefty price tag was a real turn off. She had bought her Apple laptop the year before for $1100, on sale, that was the sale price!!!! So I went with the laptop I have now for $700 less, with good ol’ familiar Windows. I’ve been extremely happy with Windows 7 and when these offers to upgrade to Windows 10 for free started constantly popping up on my computer last year I just ignored them. My ignoring soon turned to curiosity, but I resisted as knew with any new technology (especially software) there would be bugs and I didn’t want to deal with that.
2 weeks ago I finally took the plunge and upgraded to Windows 10… dun dun dun! I don’t know if I did it because the free upgrade ends July 29 and I panicked or I was just bored and impulsively hit the ‘YES’ button to the upgrade window that pops up every day.

That is exactly what I thought the whole time, ‘what’s the catch?’ The thing that finally pushed me over the edge into updating to Windows 10 was when I read an article on forbes.com that said not only is Windows 10 free but all of the subsequent updates are free too, but only before July 29.
Was it worth it?
I don’t know, right now it doesn’t feel like it as there’s a number miner, yet annoying things that have happened since the update. First up, and probably the most annoying thing is when I plug my headphones into the jack it doesn’t automatically switch to headphone audio. Instead I have to manually switch it over by going into playback devices and setting the headphones to default. In the grand scheme of things this isn’t a big deal but it’s really annoying and I have yet to find a way to fix this. Some suggestions have been to update my drivers… ughhhhhhh! Whenever I read that I don’t truly know what it means and I don’t really know how to do it, to me ‘update divers’ means pain in the ass thing I don’t want to do or know how to do and is never as easy as it’s made out to be. Why do I have to update drivers?!! Why didn’t the Windows 10 update do it?!! Why do I have to do this WORK?!! ITS BEEN A YEAR, WHY HASN’T THIS PROBLEM BEEN CORRECTED?!!

I could continue to list the other small annoyances that have come with Windows 10 but I’m already pretty riled up and I don’t need to spend $500 on a new laptop after I throw this one over my balcony. In general Windows 10 is running fine and I can do everything important that I could do before, it’s just those minor annoyances really add up and frustrate the hell out of me. Time will tell if I made the right decision, but right now despite the annoyances I’m sticking with Windows 10.
