For Chester

I was saddened to hear Chester Bennington, singer for Linkin Park had taken his life. I really struggle to find the words to say when you hear news like this but I wanted to write a small tribute.

I was a fan of Linkin Park back in the bands early days. Hybrid Theory released in the year 2000 and I was quite taken by the interesting mash up of metal and rap that made the band stand out. They just had a sound that felt so different from anybody else. I had to be silent though as majority of my friends at the time considered the band angsty and depressing. Yes, lyrically songs touch on negative topics. But like with many songs its open to your own interpretation what you take from them. What I took from Linkin Park and Chesters vocals was real passion in his presentation. It was in this that I found hope. Sure life really sucks sometimes especially if we think too deep into it. But when I used to listen to Chesters vocals I would feel connected that I wasn’t alone and would then often come away listening to songs with a smile, and then proceed with my day. To quote a infamous line from an early hit ‘In the end, it doesn’t really matter.’

What happened to Chester is tragic and I’m devastated to hear that this happened for Chester, his band mates and of his family. If your struggling with mental health yourself news like this is quite troubling especially if you to were a fan. What you must remember is Chester was on his own path that you had no control over. You have control over your path. So please if you are struggling ask for help, there are numerous charities that will listen to you regardless of your circumstances.

Finally it’s only fitting I mention a song at the end. The stand out hit for me was ‘Breaking The Habit,’ I think this song most of all celebrates Chesters lyrical performance. I used to play this song when I felt I was heading down a dark path. Under the circumstances it appears to hit home even more. I could go on all day about Linkin Park songs I enjoyed and how the band got me into Jay Z with there amazing remix albums. The future of Linkin Park appears unknown at this stage but my thoughts are with the band members and I hope they continue to create great music. Whether that is as Linkin Park or elsewhere.

It’s hard article to end on as this is such a sad sorry but have a good one guys. Please take care of yourself.

All the best
