What Happened to Merit?

My writings usually deal with history, science, or science fiction topics, but there’s a trend that I’ve been observing for some time that I can no longer ignore. In fact, I’m so disturbed by it that I can’t remain silent any longer. It’s the complete disregard for merit that we’ve seen in recent years that distresses me so.

People are being hired at higher rates of pay than those who have been doing the same jobs for decades. The educated are being passed over in favor of the barely literate, and loyalty seems to have no value at all. How did this happen? Thank 2020.

By now we’ve all heard of the great resignation. Basically, a lot of people got to experience life without the constant stress of work for the first time and didn’t want to go back to the same stressful jobs with the same low pay. Consequently, the companies that laid them all off now can’t find workers for the same wages they once paid, so they’ve increased their wages. The problem is that this often only applies to new hires. the old employees are just out of luck. This is particularly frustrating for those who worked through the pandemic and held those companies together, allowing them to weather the storm. When you hear that wages are increasing, I assure you they're not increasing for everybody. However, prices for goods and services…
