Dear Bernie Sanders: About 83% of senior citizens on Medicare also buy (or get it paid for by an employer or ex-employer) private Medicare supplemental health insurance -- dubbed Medigap -- to cover the spread between what Medicare pays for and what doctors and hospitals actually charge. Are you really then going to make private insurance illegal?

And on top of that, Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare part C) is a plan where the federal government and private health insurance companies work together to provide coverage to senior citizens. Doesn't Bernie Sanders know this? He should.

Eliminating private health insurance is a questionable and potentially dangerous idea.

And another thing Sanders is forgetting: Sander's plan accounts for how to pay for Medicare by raising taxes, but it doesn't really address how to pay for the costs of Medicare supplemental insurance that seniors pay for out-of-pocket. If we eliminate private health insurance, as Sanders says he'll do, the cost of the supplemental insurance will then fall to the federal government to cover. So Sanders will have to raise taxes by about 15% more than he's saying he'll need to.
