I’d actually argue that fear-mongering writing did cause Brexit — Boris Johnson was fired from the Times in 1989 for fabricating a quote. He then moved to The Telegraph and made up nonsense about the EU quite regularly in his column throughout the 90s while he was their Brussels correspondent. He then used his own made up journalism as his citations for the Vote Leave campaign, drumming up latent populist fear and xenophobia.
