Is Desalination the ultimate solution to the global water crisis?

We all know the importance of water and how it helps in maintain our body temperature, helps in body functions and most importantly, how it helps in maintain the life of every living organism planet. There is a legit reason we are required to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Have you ever imagined what will happen if one day you wake up and realise that there is not a drop to drink?

With almost 783 populating our planet, it is only time we decide to do something about the lack of water in many third world countries. We may or may not be altered with this situation/ calamity, but if the things remain same, trust us, the day is not far when we all would be fighting for every drop.

So, why wait for that day, why not start taking up precautionary steps from now onwards? Or otherwise, we all would be the victim of water scarcity.

What is water scarcity?

The term water crisis is a dreadful and a dire situation where the available water is potable and not fit for consumption. The available water is polluted, filled with contaminants and other intoxicants and shamefully, doesn’t meet the requirements for everybody in the region. It is a common occurrence in underdeveloped and developing countries and action needs to be taken soon. So what’s the solution?

Before we expound desalination, let us first get some facts straight about global water crisis and why we need and should have acted upon it…like yesterday!!!

. It is a major threat to the survival system

. Very little time to respond/ take action

. We lack proper resources to deal with the situation diligently

. It will have a great impact on the current economic situation

. Will lead to more complex diseases and serious threats to every living organism

Now that we are clear on why water crisis is a major threat, let us now focus on its solution- the ultimate solution- desalination!

Desalination is a lengthy yet productive process that basically removes salts from the target substance or element. Basically, saltwater is desalinated to produce water which would be suitable for human consumption and agricultural practices. About 97% of earth’s surface is oceans and seas so imagine, how much water we can use and this can actually solve the problem for global water crisis.

There are other ways like reverse osmosis, to desalinize water but it cannot be conducted at a large scale, so- desalination.

The only disadvantage with this process that it exorbitant, making it an almost impossible task for some countries.

Why it should be implemented ASAP:

Oceans and sea have enough water and potential to support people near and around the coast, so just imagine everyone having access to clear water!

. It can solve the problem of water scarcity

. Oceans are getting more saline, causing problems for aquatic life

. In the coming times, it can get costlier

If we have the solution, why aren’t the necessary steps being taken? Just think about it!

From boiling the water to using chemicals to using multi-stages RO water purification systems, we have come a long way to making the water drinkable.
