Mapping Spaceship Earth

For millenia humans have constructed maps to navigate the space around them and over time have developed a science of mapmaking: cartography.

Over the years, many different representations of our planet have been created. The main ones include the Mercator projection and the Gall-Peters projection. They each achieve their own ends. I find the Mercator projection more aesthetically appealing, but every map has its pros and cons.

One map that I think ideally maps our planet is Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion map.

Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Map

The reason I like this map so much is becaus it paints the land in a way that makes the continents unite into one massive land peace, acting as a geographic symbol of unification.

As Buckminster Fuller, himself said:

“We are not going to be able to operate our Spaceship Earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. It has to be everybody or nobody.”
