42nd Street is the heart touching story of young Peggy Sawyer who is another face in the chorus line on Broadway’s newest show. However, after the leading lady gets injured, Peggy might just have the shot at stardom. The show is adapted from the 1933 film of the same name.
In the year 1980, the show made its debut on Broadway and won prestigious Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Choreography. In the year 1984, the show made its London’s West End debut and won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. In the year 2001, the show made its Broadway revival and won the Tony for Best Revival.
One of the key highlights of the 1984 London production was the sterling performances which starred a young Catherine Zeta-Jones. The role of Dorothy Brock is currently portrayed by the former ensemble member Steph Parry. Other stars of 42nd Street are Tom Lister as the hot shot director Julian Marsh whereas the role of overnight sensation is played by Clare Halse. The show is directed as well as co-authored by Mark Bramble for the original Broadway and West End productions of 42nd Street of the 2001 Tony Award winning revival.
Currently, 42nd Street is running at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. This is a large West End theatre known for playing some of the finest and large scale musicals. The theatre is majorly known for spectacular Victorian melodramas and pantomime. Since 1920s, the theatre is focussing on the development of the modern musical. The theatre has a history of original London productions of American musicals Rose Marie, The Desert Song and Show Boat, to Ivor Novello’s romantic operettas and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s groundbreaking post-war shows to The Producers and The Lord of the Rings.
Theatre has hosted My Fair Lady for a record run as the longest show for several years. However, Cameron Mackintosh’s record breaking production of Miss Saigon enjoyed run for almost ten years.
