Jim Rohn’s 9 Secrets On How to Create Million Dollar Life Changing Habits
In 1994 I started studying the mystical arts of sales & direct response marketing. Around that same time I got to meet & hear Jim Rohn speak. On one of those occasions it was at a small private dinner gathering of maybe 50 network marketing leaders for Herbalife. I was totally mesmerized by how simply & wisely he spoke. It reminded me so much of the wisdom my parents shared whilst growing up.
Jim said, (Secret #1) “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” .. So how do we form great habits that you stick to & repeat daily? We’ve all been there, hyped up on the motivation speech our favorite self improvement, business or sales leader has shared and then told to boldly go take action. I’m sure you’ve heard this a thousand times, yet how come 90% of us still aren’t where we want to be?
Its pretty simple…
1) You Need A PLAN Of Where YOU Are Wanting To Go To!
(Secret #2) “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planed for you? Not much.” Jim Rohn
We all plan our travel & vacations so why not our lives & business? If you want a great holiday then you set out an itinerary of things you’d like to see & do. Of course in those travels plan you allow for distractions to enjoy unannounced stops, rain or weather interruptions, a flat tire or plane delays. So it can be in life and business, plans are meant to be flexible & grow with you.
The reason we make plans is to give us focus. You might be flying to Rome this morning but upon arrival at the airport your flight has been delayed for 3 hours. Does that mean you go home & cry? Or go buy a ticket to Sydney? No, you’ve set a goal to enjoy a holiday visiting & sightseeing in Rome. You’ve mapped out your days and are all set to have a wonderful time. Instead you relax & read more about Rome & fine tune your plans further.
That’s the power of having a plan to give you focus & direction. Where do you see yourself in one, two or three years? What would you liked to have achieved in that time for your career or business? Create that perfect picture of what it is you’d like to be doing exactly each day and then reverse engineer your way there from where you are right now.
So for example.. In 2 years time I’d like to be working from my home office earning $30,000 per month with my own online eCommerce store selling wine accessories. I will grow my business & develop a team around me, so that I can work from 10am — 5pm, Tuesday to Thursday and enjoy the rest of my time with family and working on myself. That’s the big picture.. now reverse engineer it and get as granular as possible of where & how you’ll start. This will become the goals & to do list of your plan.
2) You’ll Need All Your Discipline & Courage To Ride That Plan Out!
(Secret #3) “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment” Jim Rohn
To some friends, family and acquaintances this plan is going to sound absolutely bat shit crazy. They’re going to only wish for you to stay here now in your J.O.B (just over broke). They also fear the unknown. What happens if you don’t reach your goals? But happens if you not only reach them but smash past them wildly exceeding everyone’s expectations? I’ve witnessed this in my own life against crazy odds.
To keep discipline in your life you need an accountability partner. Someone who is going to say to you.. “hey, how did you go this week? Did you get the goals & jobs on your to do list completed?” Work out a reward and punishment system with your accountability partner. Make sure you make it painful enough so you learn that lesson and don’t repeat it but also rewarding to entice you to keep on track.
At many stages through out working on your plan your own self doubt and other peoples fears for you are going to tear you down, if you let them. You’ll need the courage to stand up and decide whether you’re going to keep on fighting for your dreams or sell out and turn on the TV. None of this is going to be easy.
(Secret #4) “Either you run the day or the day runs you.” Jim Rohn
Make it a habit every morning before you open up email or look at Facebook to focus on your goals & to do list for the day first. Make it your priority as you start your work day.
3) Keep Educating Yourself Every Single Day!
(Secret #5) “The difference between where you are today and where you’ll be five years from now will be found in the quality of books you’ve read.” Jim Rohn
You need to keep on reading books, attending events & surrounding yourself with like-minded ass kicking individuals. If you don’t keep feeding your mind with the correct information then its going to create all sorts of mental dramas. Knowledge is not only power but the fuel for your discipline.
The deeper you understand YOU then the easy it will become to stay on course and accomplishing your goals. It will also help you better handle when things don’t go according to plan. To find alternative solutions, but never give up.
(Secret #6) “To solve any problem, here are three questions to ask yourself: First, what could I do? Second, what could I read? And third, who could I ask?” Jim Rohn
Of course there will be failures along this journey, its natural and all a part of life. Problems, failures and all sorts of issues are going to present themselves along the way. Find a mentor, get a coach or join a mastermind. When you attend business or personal development training events make sure you connect & get to know people. Create your own buddy support system.
Most importantly don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. Attend training events that share highly actionable content that will help you achieve faster as well. You’ll find these types of events great places to bounce ideas, problems & issues off the presenters and hear from their experiences how they’ve handled it. That type of knowledge combined with real experience is absolutely priceless.
4) Give Thanks & Be Happy Right Now With You!
(Secret #7) “Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.” Jim Rohn
Happiness is contagious. Share it with everyone you meet. They will appreciate it and it will leave a lasting impression. Your happiness is not only essential for your productivity but your responsibility as well. If you can’t find happiness within yourself then obviously you’re doing something wrong that’s making you unhappy right? Find out what it is and remove it. Looking to others to fill the happiness void will more often than not lead to disappointment but more importantly you aren’t in control.
Before you jump in your car, get on the bus or train to go to work make sure you’ve gone for a good walk, listened to an uplifting training and read a few pages of your current book. A simple routine like that can set you up for a great day no matter how far along you are on your journey.. be it you’re still grinding away at your job till your new business succeeds to replace your current income, or your business pumping like a well oiled machine.. how you start your day can determine how much you get done.
Find out what makes you happy on a deeper level. Ultimately that’s what we’re all searching for, happiness & fulfillment at a deep level. Share that love and happiness to make not only make your world a better place to live in but for those around you as well every single day. Besides nobody wants to hang out with a grumpy asshole for very long.
5) Look After Yourself, There Is Only ONE YOU!
(Secret #8) “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” Jim Rohn
I can’t tell you how many times in the past few years I’ve paid the price for not treating myself better. From not drinking enough water, not exercising much & poor diet choices. The list adds up and goes on.
Make sure you drink 2–4 liters of water every day. Eat lots of fresh vegetables, fruit and healthy home cooked meals. Cut out processed sugar, reduce your intake of fried foods, soda & salt to. There are lots of healthy alternatives. Exercise for 1–2 hours everyday. A good power walk for an hour in the morning & an hour in the evening will have you feeling great in no time.
Adequate rest and good nights of regular sleep are critical to a happy, healthy functioning mind & body. Pushing yourself in the name of working hard & being a hustler is awesome, just don’t sacrifice your health for it. Be smart, think long term.
Same goes with nurturing your close relationships with your special significant other & family. Feed your close relationships regularly with lots of attention even if its just to be a good listener & there spending time with them.
Nourish your body, mind & spirit so you can get to enjoy your success much longer!
(Secret #9) “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” Jim Rohn
Its your choice you can either start to design your own life plan, set goals and discipline yourself to focus & achieve them. Or you can go back to sitting on the couch and dreaming of a life that could’ve been. It truly is that simple. The choice is now.. go make it a reality.
