Easy like Sunday morning

✍🏾 “Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked.”

envy - qanah

gemütlich - agreeably pleasant: COMFORTABLE

German, from Middle High German gemüetlich pleasant, from gemüete mentality, mind

What a word, what a word—gemütlich (gə-ˈmᵫt-liḵ) is that Germanized version of vibrations sounding out over the shrill speaker of the radio in the corner of the shop window overseeing the busy bronze bodies of self-employed family bustle, the hustle humming along while sewing to a tune, hammering tacky beats, or, as my days often went, trying to inconspicuously wile away woodwork into a roadster underneath sofa feet as the Commodores echoed in music the gist of this morning’s reading, a warning against envying those other men climbing the charts of the glitterati.

“Easy like Sunday morning.”

Gemütlich represents that calming deliberation of a settled mind, comfortable in one’s skin, even with the salted pepper bearded in places that refuse the amusement of graceful aging. I’ll take my hair au naturel instead of fading back to black, or brunette, or blonde, or whatever those hues amount to for those silver years.

He lectured heady people in their seats on the singularity coming within a dozen years, that benchmark for sciencing out longevity in the genes and proteins that keep things going. And then, mid-sentence in a hackled cough into his fist, he lost me for his genius beneath the orange toupee. I half-listened after that.

Every so often, when polymaths refrain from coughing into their hands, I catch a thought surfacing in some spontaneous comparisons for the competition from those fleeting life memories—that Lamborghini throttling by me standing at a light in Miami; the chic-shouldered curves of high-heeled glossy nails swooning under chiseled chins; that Betty White living room with an ocean view in California. The dazzling glitter of glamor starts the eye wondering 🤔 why the others do it, or better yet, how could I? Gemütlich supplies an answer. 😊

If only every thought came along with thinking deeper, I imagine everyone would be so much more agreeable in the comfort of living happily in their lives. Wealth is more than bankrolls and Rolls-Royces and muscles buffed on ⛱️ beachy dreams.

Gemütlich is that decorum of deportment bore on shoulders each day, carrying the weight of another world always before us in each step along the way—that interminable happy coming.

Have a gemütlich kind of day!
