Open for all: The Well-Being Police

✍🏾 “If you refuse to listen to the cry of the poor, your own cry for help will not be heard."

I could have taken a shortcut I saw this morning, and yet I wonder if it still would have turned out the same.

The wheels slowing down told me that I'd better keep a safe distance away, even for a familiar sound from a rolled-down window.

"I wonder . . . to end this misery." 🎶 🎵

The hands gesticulated, extending in a Michelangelo creation of fingerpoint dancing to the ceiling of a gray SUV. I kept my breath to myself and walked on by the morning reverie, remembering a conversation and the full moon waning after an eclipse.

I like the way Chris Rock put it.

"What ever happened to 'crazy'?"

I wonder, too. 🤔

"When I was a kid, they used to separate the crazy kids from ev'ry body."

Yes, and I remember when they hired the first female superintendent. We started off with an open door to the supply room to acquisition whatever we needed for the year. It was paper and pencil heaven for me. 😇😊

Had I a good Google back then, I could have done better by seeing where things were headed. The in-service training captured it all in a word—inclusivity.

The classes for "those kids" few choose to teach disappeared in a memo by week’s end. We used to hear the pounding on a desk or screaming out as we walked by the 'Special Ed' doors, considering with each step how fortunate we were that year for Honors or AP.

When 'crazy' made its way into the math and science wings as well, the evening news carried the parental vitriol in sound bites and meetings until the School Board sent them all away and hired a new superintendent. It was the end of that experiment.

It happened on a grander scale somewhere long ago, when a White House chair penned a new idea for shutting down those institutions of strapped-down suits in padded walls, unfit for Michelangelo’s “Creation” longing to be free.

They let them pursue the American Dream of one nation under God.

They let them go free, and that has made all the difference for needing a Well-Being Police.

Dal' is the Hebraic word for needy and poor in this morning’s reading. It’s etymology includes the ideas of door, vine, hanging low, thin, and water. I get the gist as referencing what happens when things dry and wither to their end.
