My Programming Journey
Introduction
Hello there! My name is Ebenezer, and I’m currently pursuing my computer science degree at the University of Eldoret. I wanted to take a moment to share my journey and passion for programming, as well as my recent participation in the Power Learn Project(PLP) program. So, grab a cup of coffee and join me on this exciting adventure!
Discovering my passion
During my childhood, I nurtured a deep desire to become a pilot, soaring through the skies, exploring different parts of the world, and experiencing thrilling adventures. In the early 2010s, an exciting development took place when my father acquired a laptop. Occasionally, he would bring it home, allowing us to indulge in the joy of playing video games and occasionally watching movies on the device. Ever since I laid my hands on a it, I was fascinated by the power of technology. The endless possibilities and the ability to create something out of nothing mesmerized me. And so I thought I’d be the one to make the cool video games. Fast forward to post high school, I applied for a computer science degree program and I got accepted into one of the universities here in Kenya. As I delved deeper into the world of computer science, I realized that programming was the key that unlocked these possibilities. It became more than just a subject — it became my passion.
The Journey Begins
In January 2023, I took a significant step forward in my programming journey by joining the Power Learn Project(PLP) program. This program has been designed to challenge and enhance students’ programming abilities, pushing us to explore new languages and technologies. It has been an incredible opportunity to expand my skill set and gain practical experience in real-world scenarios. From an amazing community support, to awesome instructors and industry relevant curriculum, PLP has played a very significant role in shaping my programming skills and overall growth as a software Engineer.
Diving into programming
Programming is not just about writing lines of code; it’s about solving problems creatively. The PLP program has exposed me to various programming languages, allowing me to broaden my horizons and think beyond my comfort zone. From Python to web development to data analysis and database design, each module has added new dimensions to my programming prowess. A notable feature of the PLP program is its emphasis on cultivating soft skills, ensuring that software developers are well-rounded individuals capable of thriving in cross-functional teams, effectively communicating their ideas, and delivering results even in high-stakes situations.
Challenges and growth
Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. Mastering new languages and adapting to different programming paradigms can be daunting at times. However, it is through these challenges that I have experienced the most growth. Each obstacle has taught me resilience, problem-solving, and the importance of seeking help and the magic that comes with collaboration.
